Websites

I've made quite a few websites. I don't claim they're particularly impressive design-wise, or technically. I don't even claim they work properly in all browsers. I used to have about nine web browsers and I'd test my sites in all of them, and get annoyed with other sites which only worked in one browser or were unreadable on black & white monitors. Now I just can't be bothered, I use the simplest technology possible to get the result I want, check it in a few browsers, and hope that will be enough. I'm not a serious web designer, but it's a fun hobby. I get an idea for a site, and I see if I can express it. I tend to reinvent the wheel when I make web pages, something I never allow myself to do when I program anything serious. I know full well that there is software out there to make nice blogs, wikis, and all sorts of other websites, which I could adapt to my purposes, but instead I write my own. My non-techy friends have better websites than mine because of them. But the web is my sandbox. I probably shouldn't have chosen something so public to mess around with.

In my mind the three most important things to consider for a website, in descending order of priority, are:
  1. Content
  2. Organisation of content
  3. Appearance

A lot of sites seem to get this the wrong way around, using all kinds of fancy things to get the appearance right which serve only to make the content inaccessible in most browsers. Thus my apronyms site, for instance, has a lot of apronyms, a lot of links (to and from categories, apronyms, apronymists, etc) but it probably looks terrible. This site, which represents me, has a wide range of useless pieces of information, a confusing mess of links between them, and I don't care what it looks like.
