Title: Acronymous Anonymous
Post by: Angela Brett on July 27, 2001, 08:37:34 PM
Hi,

I've had a lot of people send acronyms which are not suitable for this site, mostly because they are commonly used acronyms or mnemonics which either don't spell words or the words aren't related to the expansions. However, I've also had some acronyms sent to me which are the right kind of acronym, but they're reasonably well known and nobody knows who thought of them.

I don't really want to include these on the site, because then I'd feel like I'd have to add all the anonymous acronyms out there, and people might get the idea they can just scour other acronym sites and send me their finds. These could soon begin to dominate over the acronyms which were sent in by their authors, and the people who actually deliberately contributed to this website/stack would fade into the background. I also prefer it if the acronymist knows about this site, although that's not such an issue with acronyms which nobody knows the origin of.  I'm fine if the creator of the acronym wishes to be marked as Anonymous, as long as the acronym(s) are still submitted by whoever thought of them. I want this website to be more about creation than collection.

However, some of the acronyms are quite good. Rather than cluttering the main site with anonymous contributions, there could be a forum thread (this one!) where people can post well known/anonymous acronyms which they particularly like. Of course, these would only be acronyms which otherwise fit roughly inside the submission guidelines - the acronym would have to fit the expansion, and they'd be deliberately created as this form of wordplay rather than just a bunch of letters like JABOL.

Angela, you now have to expand JABOL.  A matter of honor, it is.  :)

Here are some of the acronyms I've been sent, which were heard in conversation:

BITCH--
1) Beautiful, Intelligent, Talented, Charming and Helpful
2) Beautiful, Intelligent, Talented, Charming and Horny
3) Bill's in Trouble, call Hillary
4) Boys, I'm taking charge here

I've also seen a few on a website - BASIC=Bill's Attempt to Seize Industry Control, and the wholly incorrect MACINTOSH=Most Applications Crash, If Not, The Operating System Hangs.

Welcome, Raqchel.
Could you tell us what you're thinking of here.... what is 'fresh'... imported produce or 'innocent' new arrivals in town.
This sounds to me like it could be quite an old expression, possibly dating back to the late 19th or early 20th century and the times of mass migration.

Does the 'hyper' part of your email address have any relation to HyperCard?

Hey, the forum(s) is/are working again!

Does anyone think these Acronymous Anonymous apronyms should be added to the main site? I'm starting to

rethink my initial objections. While I still don't want to be spending time scouring the internet for

anonymous apronyms, it might seem kind of petty that the largest apronym website does not have the ones

which are most commonly known. Maybe I should start accepting any such apronyms which are submitted,

instead of directing the submitters to this thread.

At least then all these apronyms will be associated with the term 'apronym' and not just acronym or

backronym.

What do you think?

Quantity versus Quality - I don't know, I suppose I can see both points of view. We don't want just any old rubbish but then I dislike censorship :-(

It wouldn't be 'any old rubbish' in that it would only extend to common/anonymous apronyms, not ordinary acronyms or initialisms.

This one was submitted for TEAM:

Together Everyone Achieves More

It has more than 6000 Google results so I'm guessing it's not by the person who submitted it.

They're Emulating A Master?

Do you Google-check all entries, or just the ones that seem too good to be new/true

I check most apronyms by new contributors (i.e, people who might not realise that such apronyms won't be accepted.) Also any which seem familiar -- I've seen the car- and computer-related ones a lot.
