Title: Alphabet equal opportunity
Post by: Angela on March 09, 2004, 01:38:40 PM
Hi,

I was thinking about starting a thread where people could post apronyms beginning with the lexically disadvantaged letters such as Q, when I came up with a more fun idea. I vaguely recall playing a game when I was a child where somebody would come up with a topic, and we'd go through the alphabet with each person coming up with a word suiting the topic starting with the next letter of the alphabet. A common one was animals, where the first person might say aardvark, the next bat, the next cat, etc.

Why don't we start one of those here, but each word would be apronymised? I'll pick a topic to start with, and each post has to include an apronym on that topic beginning with the next letter or the alphabet, and, optionally, an apronym starting with A on a new topic (which the next people would have to continue, so that each post thereafter has to contain several apronyms.)

If I had a dictionary nearby I'd flip it to a random page and choose the first word I saw as the topic, but I'm at work right now. Instead, I typed some random letters into dictionary.com and chose one of the suggested correct spellings, which was 'cookfire'. Therefore, I have decided that the topic will be food. I'll start with a food beginning with A, resisting the temptation to do Apple:

ANISEED: Always Nice In Sweets, Enjoy Every Dose

So, the next poster has to come up with a food beginning with B, preferrably one which hasn't been apronymised yet.

Jeff, I wasn't aware that 3 started with L. That would confuse Romans.

DANISH: Definitely A Nourishment I Should Have

Hey, this could be played like the card game 'Last Card' in which you can change suit by putting down several of the same number. Thus if the next poster 'puts down' a second DANISH but with a different meaning, s/he could switch the 'suit' from foods to nationalities. I could put down a second danish myself but I'm greedy. Perhaps rather than completely changing the suit the game would split into two threads so each person has to put down both a nationality and a food.

I'm not quite sure how the other rules of Last Card would apply, but if you can apply a Last Card rule convincingly/amusingly enough to this game I might let you get away with it. I'd say we should pretend there are only four of each 'number' in the pack, so you can't apronymise more than four different kinds of danish before going onto an E of whichever suit we end up in

It's nice of you to do a difficult letter for us, but what if somebody were to change the 'suit' now (as outlined in my earlier post) and make your ZITI unnecessary? :) Also, I think whoever does the Z word gets to choose the topic for our next alphabet traversal. Since you've done the Z prematurely, that means the next topic will have to begin in your next post and run concurrently with this one. To make things interesting, try to choose something we don't already have a category for.

Yes, I am making up the rules as I go along. Try it... it's fun.

Are you sure you mean Neoliths? My Chambers dictionary defines neolith as a Neolithic artefact, where Neolithic refers to the late Stone Age (which was, according to http://collections.ic.gc.ca/gardens/Horticulture/Time%20Line.htm, hundreds of millions of years after the dinosaurs died out) and an artefact is a thing made by human workmanship.

> Are you sure you mean Neoliths?

When I was looking through the thesaurus, this had the closest meaning to artifact that started with N.

Now, to continue...

First, on the legal front...

Duhaime's only lists one legal term beginning with K, so here are a few for it...

KIN
Kan't Inherit from Neighbors
Kid's Into Naughtiness
Kinship Is Necessary

Now, dinosaurs always tend to be popular with the kids, so this one is pretty plain...

DINO

But, I'm sure we're looking for something a little more complex (or at least more lengthy)...

Sorry for being picky, but according to my dictionary, bones aren't artifacts! (They can be made into them, but I would guess that Neolithic people were no more likely to come across dinosaur bones than we are.)

KIN
Kan't Inherit from Neighbors

And while I'm being picky, I don't know about this one... two cheats (Kan't and the extra word) in one three-letter apronym. It's not up to your usual standard.

Now for my L word... believe it or not we don't even have an apronym for LAW yet.

Now for mine, one starting with C...

The Deadman's Button is a device installed in lomotives that must remain depressed by the engineer (usually under his/her foot) to prevent the brakes from being applied; the theory is that if the engineer had a lapse of consciousness (falling asleep, heart attack, whatever), his foot would come off the button, thus applying the brakes.

For the legal entry, we always see cartoon characters writing them...

WILL
What Is Last Left
Writer Is LifeLess

Yeah, the second is pushing it, but it seemed to fit.

For trains, here are a few for different steam locomotive types:

MALLET
Massive Articulated Locomotive, Large Engineering Triumph
(The mallet type refers to any articulated steam locomotive; two sets of drive wheels under one boiler, with the front set on a pivot to get around turns easier; the design was first implemented by Anatole Mallet [ref: http://loggingmallets.railfan.net/sub/malletinfo.htm]

MOGUL
Mindful Of Gyrating, Uneven Lines
(the Mogul was one of the first wheel arrangements to include an unpowered axle before the drive axles; the unpowered axle helped guide the drive axles into a curve)

MASTODON
Massive And Stable-Treaded, One Design Over None
(The mastodon type, with two unpowered lead axles and four drive axles, was billed as the perfect answer to really heavy-duty hauling in the 1880s)

MOUNTAIN
Mastodon's Outdone Using New Trailing Axle, Improving Numbers
(the mountain type was a one-up of the mastodon by including a single unpowered trailing axle to support a larger firebox, giving the type even greater pulling power)

MIKADO
Made It, Kept Another Delivery Option
(The first locomotive of this type was built for export to Japan, to be delivered to the Mikado; however, WWII negated the delivery and all of the deliveries were redirected to US customers)

Finally, for dinos, how about...
PROTOCERATOPS
Prehistoric Relative Of Triceratops, One Chinese Excavation Reveals Another Treasure Of Prehistoric Science
(the protoceratops, considered to be a precursor of other horned dinos, was discovered in China and Mongolia; it is one of only a handful of creatures where scientists have found evidence from eggs through adulthood)

Welcome to apronymania, omnicronos! I would have responded earlier but I've been too busy to come up with the required apronyms.

SAND DRAG
Stop And Not Derail Delinquent Railcars... A Godsend!

(according to http://www.glue-it.com/trains/general-information/glossary/glossary_frames.htm a Sand Drag
is a short length of railway track buried in sand, and running from a set of catch points. It is designed to bring runaway vehicles to a halt rather than derailing them.)

Thanks for the welcome. :-)
Looking at the hall of fame, I think a break after such prolific apronyming is probably forgivable.
You hall-of-famers do realise how intimidating clever wordsmiths are to the rest of us, right?

(dinosaurs)
WALKERIA
Was A Little Killer. Eventually Renamed. Is Alwalkeria.

(according to http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/dinosaurs/glossary/indexw.shtml, Walkeria was a small bipedal carnivore. And, according to http://www.isgs.uiuc.edu/dinos/de_4/5ce8942.htm, it changed its name in 1987 - just enough to avoid recursion)

I thought I'd have a crack at this one, figuring that I'd rudely ignore the whole alphabetical order idea.
But, fortune has smiled on me... there was a nice gap.

Okay, I'm back.  After a vacation to Seattle where I attended the National Model Railroad Association's national convention, and a rather busy time on my return, it's time to get back to the really important stuff.  B-)

UDE
Ultimate Deceleration Event
Untimely Disruption of Employment
(UDE is a railroad acronym for UnDesired Emergency, as in an event where the brake system on a train is set to the "Emergency" setting, bringing the train to a stop as absolutely soon as possible.  Most often a train is set into Emergency when a car is stopped on a railroad crossing or desides to drive around the gates; engineers in this situation are normally granted a psychological leave for a short period.)

While sitting in a train next to Tony McCoy O'Grady, I remembered this thread. I should have mentioned it to him so we could brainstorm, but I didn't, so all I came up with was these:

VIEW: Vista In Every Window
WAITING ROOM: We Aren't In Train, I'm Now Getting Restless Over Our (Mis)adventure. (We missed the train we were supposed to be on by about a minute, and had to wait a few hours for the next one.)
WAGON: We Are Getting On Now.

And here are some for letters we've already done:

TRAIN: Two Rails Are Invariantly Near

LUAS: Locals Understand As 'Speed'
According to http://www.lrta.org/luasindex.html:

What does the name LUAS stand for? Luas is the Irish word for speed and so (as it is not an abbreviation) should be written Luas rather than L.U.A.S.

Well, we've proven them wrong!

All the signs on the train (and elsewhere) have English and Irish translations. On one I noticed that the translation of 'warning' was RABHADH, which I expanded to:

Read And Beware, Here Are Dire Hazards

Hopefully all this training will make up for the fact that I haven't continued the other threads. At least we're back on topic.
